Born in Mishawaka, Indiana, and based in Chicago for over 30 years, Portolese found his muse in Jazz during his college years. Life in Chicago brought various music studies, including the great Jack Cecchini, Joe Daley and voice with Bill Rush. Currently teaching at the University of Michigan and Elmhurst College, Portolese is returning to Jazz camp at Interlochen Arts Academy this summer....

Frank remembers: "About five years ago I began to consider how to solve the various problems of trying to play solo guitar with the pick. I like straightahead archtop style, from solo to whatever. Closest to my heart are Bird and Trane and Duke and Pops and all the 40's, 50's and 60's thing. I started as a big Hendrix fan (still am), but Joe Pass and George Benson won me over.
