The magic number nine allows me to work within the more intimate feel of a quintet but with enough instruments to express the richer harmonies and tonal colors I'm hearing without sounding as unwieldy as a typical 17-piece big band. It's time to help uplift some of Chicago's greatest improvisers and interpreters of a shared sense of rhythmic palette, phrasing, and general artistic aesthetic with this work. These concerts at the Hungry Brain in April will celebrate these efforts.
