This CD Celebration with Chicagoâs tenor great Fred Anderson will feature one of his long-time collaborators, bassist Tatsu Aoki.
âBlack Horn Long Goneâ was recorded at Sparrow Sound Design Recording Studio, Chicago, Illinois â January 1993 â A Direct-to Digital Recording. This notable recording features both the late Malachi Favors Maghostut on acoustic bass, and Ajaramu on drums.
Fred Anderson is a Chicago original. His tenor saxophone sounds like a mighty warrior â the sound clear, focused and strong. His recorded output is continually evolving. Anderson notes that he has always felt that this recording is important for his discography.
~ BLACK HORN LONG GONE ~
Fred Anderson â Tenor Saxophone (b. 3/22/1929)
Malachi Favors Maghostut â Acoustic Bass (8/22/1927 â 1/29/2004)
Ajaramu (AJ Shelton) â Drums (1926 â 2006)
Andersonâs club, The Velvet Lounge, which he started in 1982, has become a Chicago landmark for the jazz and experimental music scenes for both musicians and fans, and continues to host regular jam sessions after relocating in the summer of 2006.
âWe are losing the art of improvisation. I've dedicated my whole life to improvisation -it's an art form. Guys can play all night and every night and never play the same thing twice -there's an ART to it. Charlie Parker is the finest example, as I've been researching â those musicians trusted each other. That's the way we created these recordings, right in the studio, we trusted each other. You got to pretty much know what you're doing, and know where you are at all times, that's called concentration. As I've been doing research on how this music came about, and how these guys put this music together â Itâs gonna be a lost art -improvisation.â
