During the weekend of December 9-11, the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra will be performing and recording Christmas music for an upcoming compact disc. As part of their subscription series at the Hanna Theatre in Playhouse Square, these concerts will feature rising vocalist Nia Drummond, who was featured on CJO's Ella and Ellington concert in 2015.

About Nia Drummond:
A native of Brooklyn, Nia Drummond, 22, is a Voice Performance major studying with Shinobu Takagi at the State University of New York at Fredonia. She has appeared as a solo performer at the Apollo Theater in New York City and the New World Center in Miami. She also appeared in Renée Fleming’s “American Voices,” which aired on PBS, singing gospel, jazz, and classical music.
Earning positive reviews in both the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, Nia has been described as a “moving and electrifying performer.” In addition to her credits as a solo artist, Ms. Drummond has performed with award-winning ensembles such as the Grammy honored Brooklyn Youth Chorus and Young People’s Chorus of New York City. She has also appeared as a background vocalist for the likes of Sir Elton John, Bette Midler, Fantasia Barrino, John Legend, and in choruses under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas, the late Lorin Maazel, James Levine, and others.
Ms. Drummond has performed in competitions and concert series in Washington D.C., Atlanta, Chicago, Pittsburgh, New Orleans, the Dominican Republic, Switzerland, and Austria. Additionally, her opera credits include Mother Superior in Hess’ “Felice” with the Hillman Opera Company, title role in Picker’s “Therese Raquin” and Donna Anna in Mozart's "Don Giovanni" under the baton of Glenn Coretese with the Western New York Chamber Orchestra. Her masterclass credits include work with Renée Fleming, Ruth Falcon, Kim Burrell, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Jake Heggie.
In January of 2015, Ms. Drummond made her debut at Lincoln Center (Alice Tully Hall) in the role of Edith in a condensed version of the Gilbert and Sullivan opera “Pirates of Penzance” with the University Glee Club of New York City.
A proud alumna of the National Young Arts Foundation, Ms. Drummond was one of three winners of the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts “Jazz Voice” award in 2012 and recipient of the 2012 Gordon Parks Centennial Scholarship Award. In 2015, Nia performed the national anthem at Ground Zero as part of the 15th 9/11 memorial service.
