MoCADA (Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts) will be hosting an exclusive Brooklyn premiere of Randy Weston’s new book, African Rhythms. This evening will include a discussion and book signing from Mr. Weston himself, as well as performances by the local talents -- Charisa the ViolinDiva and Blitz the Ambassador
Randy Weston was born and raised in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. Growing up, many of his major musical influences were not too far from his reach. In the book, he describes his friendships with some of the great jazz musicians, including Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, and Dizzy Gillespie. Mr. Weston has travelled extensively throughout Africa, performing in eighteen different countries. He never failed to make the connection between African and American music. With more than forty albums to his name, and more recently the recipient of the Living Legend Award from Berkshires Jazz, Inc., the South Orange Jazz Master’s Award, and countless other honors, Randy Weston is an internationally renowned composer and jazz great....
