Since moving to New York in 1982, Rick Stone has earned respect as a musician and educator. His recordings "Blues For Nobody," "Far East" and "Samba de Novembro" have received significant national airplay and critical acclaim. Robert Silverstein of 20th Century Guitar magazine calls Rick "one of the finest straight-ahead guitarists on the current NYC jazz scene." The August 2007 issue of Cadence Magazine featured an extensive interview in which Rick discusses his Cleveland roots and his development since moving to New York. Rick has performed at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall, the Blue Note, the Smithsonian Institute, Kennedy Center, and other major venues. His own groups have included stellar line-ups with musicians like Kenny Barron, Barry Harris, Ralph Lalama, and Eric Alexander. He has also worked as a sideman with blues singer Irene Reid, saxophonist Eric Person, and swing clarinetist Sol Yaged. As well as performing Rick teaches jazz guitar at Hofstra University, Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, and the Jazzmobile Saturday Workshop Program. He has received numerous grants and awards including several NEA Performance Fellowships and the IAJE's Award for Outstanding Service to Jazz Education.
Jack Schantz is a well known fixture on the Northeast Ohio Jazz scene. From 1993-2008 he served as Musical Director of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra. He also serves as Coordinator of Jazz Studies at The University of Akron. During the 80’s, he toured the U.S. and Japan as featured jazz trumpet soloist with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Glenn Miller Orchestra, Artie Shaw Orchestra, and Woody Herman’s Thundering Herd. He has performed with Wynton Marsalis, Tom Harrell, Arturo Sandoval, Joe Lovano, Bob Brookmeyer, Maria Schneider, Clare Fischer, Sammy Nestico, Slide Hampton, and many others. In addition to his jazz credentials, Jack has toured with a number of Broadway shows, recorded dozens of television and radio jingles, and performs as a member of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra and the Blossom Festival Band.
Rick's association with bassist Dave Morgan began while they were both music students at Tri-C West, studying with Dr. Joseph Howard. Dave has since performed with many leading jazz artists, including Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Benny Golson, Cedar Walton, John Hicks, and Mose Alison. His compositions have been recorded by the Polish National Chamber Orchestra, the Amercian Wind Symphony Orchestra, and by members of the Cleveland Orchestra. In 2006 he was commissioned to compose a suite featuring Joe Lovano and the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra which can be heard on "The Surprise of Being: Live at Birdland." He is currently Associate Professor of Double Bass and Composition at Youngstown State University.
