Kaufmann/Gratkowski/de Joode unite the transparency of contemporary chamber music – incorporating silence as well as slipping into noise realms that are then reinterpreted and punctuated by relics of almost tonal piano chords – with the energy, pointedness, and unpredictability of jazz and other more rhythmically aggressive music.
From the beginning, the trio’s music was freely improvised, born of the moment. There were and are no rehearsals or agreements, no conceptual considerations in advance – a fact that has puzzled many a listener, reviewer or fellow musician, since much of the trio’s music sounds „as if composed“.
Kaufmann/Gratkowski/de Joode toured North America for several weeks in 2007 and 2009 (including Roulette New York, Princeton University, Earshot Festival Seattle, Mills College Oakland, Umbrella Festival Chicago, New Orleans, Vancouver, Toronto, Montréal) and in early 2020 to Australia and Southeast Asia.
They have performed across Europe at many important stages and festivals (BIMhuis Amsterdam; Porgy und Bess Vienna; Ars Nova Festival (SWR); Ring Festival Belgrade; De Singel Antwerp; Musée d’art moderne Strasbourg; Exploratorium Berlin, Alternativa Festival Prague, Klangspuren Festival).
