Aside from a long standing tradition of great bassists Denmark has also accumulated an impressive track record of prominent jazz pianists, perhaps influenced to a large extent by the presence of legendary American expat jazz pianists living in Denmark since the 1960s, i.e. Kenny Drew, Horace Parlan and Duke Jordan. The generation of Danish pianists that followed was extremely proficient and prolific and was spearheaded in the 1970s by master jazz pianists Thomas Clausen and Ole Kock Hansen. The latter became Niels Lan Doky’s piano teacher prior to his departure to the USA, prompted by his mentor at the time, Thad Jones. Today the Copenhagen jazz scene includes vast array of great pianists, such as Carsten Dahl, Henrik Gunde and Jacob Christoffersen to name but a few. The most recent revelation here is CALLE BRICKMAN, a wonderful young Swedish piano player now living in Denmark, who by the age of 16 had already played over 60 concerts as a sideman around Scandinavia. Here 9 years later, he is now based in Copenhagen where he has become one of the jazz scene’s main young piano players. Just as incredibly exciting and rarely talented as his peer appearing tonight too, the young Danish bassist Tobias Dall. Both have a strong presence of their Scandinavian roots in their jazz vocabulary and create a great experience combining virtuosity with great swing and sparkling creativity. We at The Standard Jazz Club believe that Calle Brickman has the potential to become of the most significant pianists on the international jazz scene and we are very excited and proud to be involved in working with him and help him further develop his career and already highly evolved artistry....

Veteran drummer ALVIN QUEEN and Niels Lan Doky go way back: Alvin Queen played on NLD’s debut album in 1986 “Here or There” which also featured Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and was also the drummer on NLD’s first tour of Japan in 1988 and many other projects. They are today both members of the Oscar Peterson Legacy Quartet with guitarist Ulf Wakenius and bassist Dave Young. Originally from New York, Alvin Queen built a name for himself as the drummer of the Horace Silver Quintet (alongside other exciting sidemen contemporaries such as Mike Brecker, Randy Brecker, Tom Harrell and Bob Berg) and he has has performed with a who’s-who in jazz, including George Benson, Nina Simone, Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie and numerous others. And for many years he was the drummer in the final edition of the Oscar Peterson Quartet before the leader’s passing

Denmark has a long standing tradition for great bassists, arguably initiated by Oscar Pettiford who lived the last 2 years of his life in Denmark 1958-1960, and although Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen is the most prominent Danish bassist to date, the list of great world class Danish bassists is long and also includes Mads Vinding, Chris Minh Doky, Jesper Lundgaard and others. The latest addition to the bunch appears to be the 28 year old young Danish bassist TOBIAS DALL, who first appeared at The Standard as part of the Brickman Dall Trio and quickly revealed an exceptional and rare talent in addition to a great sound and unique style and approach. With a well balanced mix between American and Scandinavian influences he combines a warm organic sound with melodic lyricism and rhythmic drive. Earlier this year The Standard Jazz Club’s music director Niels Lan Doky and his dear friend and legendary drummer Alvin Queen auditioned Tobias Dall. They were both extremely impressed and became determined to offer this young man the experience and challenge he needs to reach his full artistic potential. So we are very excited to be working with Tobias Dall on his new journey towards higher musical horizons.
