Af mange anses han for at være den mest swingende trommeslager, og hans CV bevidner klart og tydeligt, at han er eftertragtet af de store jazzikoner. I 1977 blev han medlem af Woody Hermans Orchestra, og derfra gik det løs med indspilninger og turnéer over hele verden med bl.a. L.A. Four, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Brown, Monty Alexander, Count Basie Orchestra og ikke mindst Oscar Peterson, i hvis gruppe han var fast medlem af i 5 år, og Natalie Cole, hvor Hamilton medvirker på de to Grammy-vindende udgivelser ”Unforgettable” og ”Still Unforgettable”.
