Gilberto Gil has always had the gift of incorporating every aspect of daily life into his work – from his initial tenure with bossa nova through to his work with longtime collaborator Caetano Veloso and their foundation of tropicália, his four years as Brazil’s cultural minister (2003-2008) and now, at the age of 76, with the release of his latest album “OK OK OK” (2018). From family life to political, social or cultural movements that characterize his time, everything is an inspiration for a new song, an idea for a melody, an ingenious harmonic movement.

Over the course of his impressive career, Gilberto Gil has sung the songs from the northeastern part of Brazil and his childhood in Ituaçu, shaped by his unending admiration of Luiz Gonzaga – an essential vanguard for the influential music emanating from Northeast Brazil in the 20th century. Gilberto Gil has sung about technological developments and their impact on the human journey. He has immersed himself in the depths of being, celebrating feast and faith.

From tropicalist electric guitars to the intimate acoustic guitar, Gil’s integrity and commitment to the spirit of music is unshakable. Gil is not afraid of death and not afraid of life, and this attitude has rarely been more evident than on the modern icon’s latest album.

“OK OK OK” conjoins his family, close friends, the illness he experienced and those who helped him through it. At the same time, Gilberto Gil questions the need for having to take a stand as demanded by society. The arrangements amplify his iconic interpretation with voice and guitar. The musical production by his son Bem and the participation of friends and family help the intimate aspects of his work stand out.

When Gilberto Gil visits DR Koncerthuset’s concert hall on March 14 he is flanked by horns, choir, keyboards, guitars, percussion and guest vocals. The audience is invited on a journey through Gilberto Gil’s visionary universe as represented by “OK OK OK” and a selection of his timeless classics – an integral part of the life and history of Brazil.

Copenhagen Jazz Festival and DR Koncerthuset are proud to yet again bid a warm welcome to a South American legend who continues to scale new rungs on his seemingly infinite creative ladder.

Gilberto Gil - en af Brasiliens største kulturelle skikkelser - vender tilbage til DR Koncerthuset i marts 2020. Legenden medbringer fuldt band samt både klassisk materiale og nye sange, bl.a. fra det Grammy-vindende album “OK OK OK”.

Gilberto Gil har altid haft evnen til at integrere nærmest alle aspekter af livet i sit virke – fra sine indledende favntag med bossa nova til sit mangeårige samarbejde med kollegaen Caetano Veloso og grundlæggelsen af tropicália-bevægelsen, sine fem år som kulturminister i hjemlandet (2003-2008) og nu, som 77-årig, med udgivelsen af det seneste album “OK OK OK” (2018), der i 2019 skaffede ikonet en Latin Grammy i kategorien Best MPB Album (Musica Popular Brasileira). Fra familielivets trummerum til politiske, sociale og kulturelle bevægelser i samtiden – alt er inspiration for Gil, enten til en ny sang, en melodi eller en opfindsom harmoni.

I løbet af sin imponerende karriere har Gilberto Gil sunget sangene fra den nordøstlige del af Brasilien og hans barndom i byen Ituaçu, formgivet af Gils utrættelige beundring af landsmanden Luiz Gonzaga – en afgørende spydspids for den indflydelsesrige musik, der strømmede fra landsdelen til resten af Brasilien i det 20. århundrede. Gilberto Gil har sunget om teknologiske landvindinger og deres påvirkning på mennesket. Han har omsluttet sig i selve det at være til og hyldet både det umiddelbare og det åndelige.

Gilberto Gils integritet og engagement er gennemført, hvad enten den bliver kanaliseret ud som elektriske tropicalia-guitarer eller mere intime akustiske klange. Gil er ikke bange for at tale om hverken liv eller død, og den frygtløse tilgang har sjældent været mere tydelig end på det moderne ikons seneste album.

“OK OK OK” samler tråde fra både Gils familie, vennerne, den livstruende sygdom, han overlevede i 2016, og alle dem, der hjalp ham tilbage på fode igen. De bløde arrangementer, sønnen Bem Gils produktion og de mange venner og familiemedlemmer, der optræder på pladen, er tilsammen med til at understrege sangenes nærhed.

Når Gilberto Gil optræder i DR Koncerthusets Koncertsal den 14. marts, bliver han både flankeret af blæsere, kor, keyboards, guitar, percussion og gæstevokaler. Publikum er inviteret med på en rejse gennem Gils visionære univers, som det kommer til udtryk på “OK OK OK” og gennem et udvalg af hans tidløse klassikere – en essentiel del af livet i og historien om det moderne Brasilien.

Copenhagen Jazz Festival og DR Koncerthuset er stolte af endnu en gang at kunne byde varmt velkommen til den sydamerikanske legende, der ufortrødent eksperimenterer med sit eget udtryk i spændingsfeltet mellem tradition og revolution.
