Jazz pianist and composer Niels Lan Doky has had one of the most extensive and unusual careers that the Danish music scene has ever seen. His professional career started already at age 13, and he was only 15 when began playing with American jazz legends Thad Jones and Ernie Wilkins. Today at the age of 50, he has released 37 album releases under his own name and has collaborated with the greatest artists in jazz and won countless awards and accolades around the world. And he has also occasionally devoted time to parallel careers as a film director, producer, author and speaker. The trio’s drummer since 2011 is the spectacular young ultra gifted Niclas Bardeleben, and on bass is the band leaders long time close friend and past musical associate, Ira Coleman, who is mostly known for his collaborations with Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams, Freddie Hubbard and Sting. “I am excited about the combination of Ira Coleman and Niclas Bardeleben”, says Niels Lan Doky, “there is a rare and unique blend of qualities between them, and I am compelled to explore where this will lead the music”.
At tonight’s concert we will hear highlights from Niels Lan Doky ‘s long career, with emphasis on repertoire from the last three records, “Return To Denmark” from 2010, “Human Behaviour” from 2011 og the album “Scandinavian Standards” from 2013.
Jazz pianisten og komponisten Niels Lan Doky har haft en af de mest omfattende og usædvanlige karrierer den danske musik scene nogensiden har set. Hans professionelle karriere startede allerede som 13 årig og som kun 15 årig kunne han høres spille sammen med amerikanske jazz legender som Thad Jones og Ernie Wilkins. I en alder af 50 år har han i dag allerede 37 pladeudgivelser i eget navn bag sig og han har samarbejdet med jazzens største koryfæer og vundet utallige priser og anerkendelser verden over. Og parallelle karrierer som filminstruktør, producer, forfatter og foredragsholder er der også ind imellem blevet fundet tid til. Efter tre årtiers fravær hvor han har boet i henholdsvis Boston, New York, Paris og London er han nu atter tilbage i Danmark hvor han blandt andet har åbnet ikke mindre end to jazz klubber i København, først det genåbnede Jazzhus Montmartre, som han lancerede i 2010 og senest The Standard, som han åbnede i 2013 sammen med Claus Meyer m.fl. Trioens trommelslager siden 2011 er det unge danske supertalent Niclas Bardeleben, og bassist er en af Dokys nærmeste venner og tidligere samarbejdspartnere fra hans mange år i Boston og New York, Ira Coleman, som er bedst kendt for sine samarbejder med Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams, Freddie Hubbard og Sting. “Jeg er begejstret for kombinationen af Ira Coleman og Niclas Bardeleben,” siger Niels Lan Doky ” der er en sjælden og unik blanding af kvaliteter imellem dem, og jeg er spændt på at udforske, hvor det vil føre musikken hen”. Til koncerten i aften skal vi høre en række highlights fra Niels Lan Doky’s lange karriere, med hovedvægt på repertoiret fra de tre seneste plader, nemlig albummet “Return To Denmark” fra 2010, “Human Behaviour” fra 2011 og albummet “Scandinavian Standards” fra 2013.
