Guitarist Barney Kessel started making a name for himself in the 1940s when bebop was on the rise. Kessel's biggest influence was Charlie Christian, who modeled a unique single-note style that would leave room in the music for fantastic solos. Kessel was always absorbed by jazz. After recording a track with Charlie Parker, Kessel later landed a spot with the Oscar Peterson Trio. He went on to record with our beloved Ray Brown, as well as many others. Reviews of his playing noted that he exemplified how well guitar could take the place of piano in jazz. Kessel held Downbeat's "Guitarist of the Year" award until Wes Montgomery came on the scene in the 60s. Kessel left a huge footprint on the scene of jazz guitar. Bruce Forman is in residency at USC's Studio/Jazz Guitar department. He has recorded beautiful soundtrack performances for Clint Eastwood's films, most notably Million Dollar Baby. Bruce has recorded with many greats, including Ray Brown - like Barney Kessel. The newest project from Bruce called Reunion! revisits the famed Poll Winners sessions with cohorts John Clayton and Jeff Hamilton, using instruments owned by Barney Kessel, Ray Brown and Shelly Manne. Bruce's additional projects are vivacious, rooted in American music traditions. He shares much of his playing on Instagram, Youtube and more.

Bruce had a great connection with Barney Kessel. In addition to hearing and seeing Kessel's guitar in the hands of Bruce in this solo show, we will get to hear stories and context that wouldn't be the same from anyone else.
