Dexter Payne QUINTET blends five distinct quintessential elements. These friends, far from a convenient or accidental jazz date, are more like a secret alchemical convocation nurtured over the last 10 years. The music is animated, driving, breath-taking and humorous. Virtuosity and joie de vie combine with collective subtlety and telepathic familiarity to make every uplifting performance a surprise. The Quintet plays Brazilian choro jazz, a tradition with roots in the 19th century, which inspired and influenced the birth of samba and bossa nova. DEXTER PAYNE – CLARINET
It was on a 2 1/2 yr walk-about that he really heard the call, playing with Latin bands and artists, slowly working his way south from Tijuana to Buenos Aires, all the while practicing his exciting new joy - traditional instrumental music from Brazil. When he arrived in Brazil he was ready to play, eventually recording with samba wonder woman Beth Carvalho. Before that, he met and recorded with the late Gaudencio Thiago de Mello. #8 clarinetist in Downbeat Readers Poll (2004 & ’06) and 2011 International Blues Challenge winner, Payne is at home in “musica brasileira” playing chorinho, baião and samba.
BILL KOPPER – 6 & 7 STRING GUITARS
Self taught in classical, blues, jazz and Brazilian guitar, he is the first call for studio work. A dynamic force in the University of Colorado Music faculty, his dynamic and harmonic sense is hard to match, featured on recordings with Brad Goode, Rene Marie and Paa Kow, to name a few.
RAOUL ROSSITER – DRUMS & PERCUSSION
The kind of drummer every other musician wants to play with. He is the go-to man for the many subtleties of Brazilian rhythms, as well as odd meter and free improvised original music.
DAVE WILLEY – ACCORDION
A phenomenal improvisor and composer, he leads and composes for Hamster Theatre (Cuneiform Records) and tours n Europe with Thinking Plague.
VICTOR MESTAS – PIANO
Highly respected in his native Caracas, Venezuela, Victor has extensive recording credits there. The most recent addition to the group, he commands the room when he plays, in any style - with his virtuosity and his joy. Renowned at home in Venezuela where he won a Latin Grammy, his musicianship is an inspiration to all.
