Lazlo TorokLazlo Torok is a pianist, vibraphonist, and composer from Denver, Colorado entering his fourth year in the jazz program at the Juilliard School. His relationship to music began with improvisation playing percussion, and after taking piano lessons he found the vibraphone as an intersection of all these elements. He has been fortunate to have mentors throughout his education at the Denver School of the Arts and now at the Juilliard School whose deep knowledge and love of the music have inspired him to pursue a career playing and studying the art form. His relationship to music began with improvisation playing percussion, and after taking piano lessons he found the vibraphone as an intersection of all these elements. He has been fortunate to have mentors throughout his education at the Denver School of the Arts and now at the Juilliard School whose deep knowledge and love of the music have inspired him to pursue a career playing and studying the art form. Lazlo is passionate about exploring the depth and range of human expression through art to tell stories. He believes music should reflect the innately tumultuous yet joyous, unpredictable, and wildly contrasting experience of being alive. To him, the music serves as a tool for emotional self-reflection as well as a deep connection between each musician and audience member. When playing, he aims to bare his most vulnerable emotions and explore without boundaries, and, in freeing himself from the internal judgement and anxiety of being a human, create a feeling of acceptance that everyone else in the space can experience too. He finds improvised music to be special as performers engage with each other to actively create each moment, which necessitates complete focus on the present. This attentiveness to the creation and interaction of sounds ensures that each story and performance will be a unique experience, much like the unfolding of our daily lives.
