Jazz at the Centre’s 2013-14 concert season boasts a diverse range of artistry and embodies the concept “all jazz is modern.” Through aroster of world-class, internationally renowned jazz artists hosted in the acoustically magnificent Paul Robeson Theater, the series is meant
to be a bridge between the artistry of the Detroit Jazz Festival andthe superior acoustic properties of Orchestra Hall.
“Jazz at the Centre will build a dedicated audience with great music, great sound, a great venue, and a great ticket price,” says Managing and Artistic Director for Jazz at the Centre, Skip Norris. “We’re presenting these artists in one of the best venues in the Midwest.”The first performance in the series will feature Ralph Peterson, who for more than thirty years has been one of the most distinctive and recognizable drummers in jazz. Peterson played alongside jazz icon Art Blakey in his two-drummer big band, and would consequently become the “last Messenger drummer.” His recording and touring resume includes
jazz luminaries Terrence Blanchard, Branford Marsalis, Stanley Turrentine, David Murray, The Count Basie Orchestra, Betty Carter,Michael Brecker, Kenny Barron and many more of some of the greatest names in jazz.
Now considered “the Dean of Modern Jazz Drumming,” Peterson is ALIVE and well, and swinging deeply on his seventeenth recording as a bandleader. Released on his own label, Onyx Productions, “Alive at Firehouse 12” captures the boundless energy and fire of his Unity
Organ Project. The recording also features Craig Handy on tenor and soprano sax, Josh Evans on trumpet, and the dynamic young talent Jake Sherman on Hammond organ.
