The Peaceful Warriors Project (โPWPโ) will be in concert at the park at Campus Martius, alongside the majestic Michigan Soldiers and Sailors Monument. The Peaceful Warriors are a seven-member jazz band celebrating past and present musicians who proudly served in the American Military. To kick off Flag Week Detroit 2014, PWP will be honoring the families of the Michigan Fallen Heroes whom the statue in Campus Martius commemorates, and presenting three such families with beautiful, framed artistโs portraits of their fallen loved ones.
This exciting community event will provide attendees with miniature American and Michigan Flags in honor of the Michigan Military Men and Women who gave their lives in the Iraqi and Afghanistan conflicts. PWP will recognize four military families, one from each branch of the military.
PWP features saxophonist Allan Barnes, a supremely gifted musical composer who himself proudly served America in the Vietnam conflict. Allan remembers honing his own musical skills while serving this Country, and reminds us, โJazz is patriotic. The Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America were both written by men who served in the US militaryโ. To continue this tradition, Allan, along with Vietnam vet John Malone, has written Bringing Home The Colors, a stirring Flag Day Anthem which will premiere at the outdoor musical extravaganza, touching the hearts and minds of all who hear it.
PWP features band leaders Rayse Biggs on Trumpet, Cliff Monear on Piano, Gayelynn McKinney on Drums, Nick Calandro on Bass and the enchanting Vocals of Sunny Wilkinson. The group derives its name from a song written in tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by jazz advocate Billy Taylor. PWPโs music radiates the bright light of jazz far beyond the boundaries of darkened clubs, to entertain every member of the family while commemorating musical military veterans such as jazz greats Henry Mancini, Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane and Detroitโs own Donald Byrd, Larry Nozero, Harold Washington and Sir Roland Hanna.
The event is produced by The Peaceful Warriors Project, and sponsored in part by iMichigan Productions, which is organized to promote the creation, production and appreciation of media and artistic content including music, video, film, photography, social media and other new content and art forms for multicultural communities. iMichigan Productions service programs include providing concerts, workshops and training opportunities for students to create and distribute media content and to increase the local Michigan talent pool of skill professionals. iMP also creates educational and entertaining programming for the public broadcasting arena that captures the stories of Michigan residents.
