Pianist/Composer Ruthie Dineen was born in Fairfield, CA and began playing piano at an early age. She comes from a vibrant, expressive family, and explored her own creativity through music, studying and playing both jazz and classical music throughout her childhood and into adulthood.
During her college years at UC Berkeley and while studying abroad in Chile and later living abroad in Costa Rica, music remained central in her life through both study and performance.
After completing her graduate studies in Social Work, Dineen decided to focus professionally on music performance and community arts (she is currently the Executive Director at East Bay Center for the Performing Arts in Richmond, CA). In her music she incorporates her vast musical and personal influences, including her Salvadoran-American heritage, classical and jazz musical background, and love for composition and improvisation. In 2010, Dineen returned to formal study in music and in December 2012, graduated from the California Jazz Conservatory with a performance degree in Jazz Studies, where she received the Jamey Aebersold Scholarship. Dineenโs principal piano teachers have included Susan Muscarella (jazz), Katrin Arefy (classical), and in composition Elinor Armer.
Currently, Dineenโs music career is focused on both composition and performance. Dineen is a founding member and co-leader of two original music ensembles, RDL+ and Negative Press Project, with whom she performs, arranges, and composes regularly. From 2015-2019 RDL+ hosted the monthly series โBay Area Bridgesโ at Studio Grand in Oakland, CA, where Dineen collaborated with different performing artists each month creating new works of art (including theater, music, dance, poetry, and visual art). In addition to her work with RDL+ and Negative Press Project, Dineen performs with a wide range of jazz, Latin, and classical musicians in the Bay Area, including Bululรบ.
An Oakland, CA native, Andrew Lion, a freelance Acoustic and Electric bass player, relocated to Bend, OR in 2021 as his base of operations to wherever performing and recording in experimental, jazz, pop, rock, and Brazilian traditions takes him (the latter with semi-regular performances accompanying Marcos Silva [Flora Purim/Airto], and separately, Tom Bergeron [Vianna/Bergeron]).
Occasionally a touring sideman with travels through West and East Coast venues, as well as experience performing throughout the Southwest for several Austin, TX, SXSW performances, Andrew Lion is a member of Jeff Campbell's band (Jeff Campbell, Static and Surrender, Wisher), with a featured performance on the nationally televised late night talk show, ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live!
He has recently accompanied celebrated Central Oregon singer-songwriter, Joel Chadd, in support of his 2022 release, โGhost of Youโ.Along with Ruthie Dineen, much of Andrewโs artistic energy is occupied co-leading the jazz adjacent electro-acoustic, post-bop chamber nonet, Oakland, CAโs, Negative Press Project- a Downbeat four-star review recipient for its Ridgeway Records recording, โEternal Lifeโ.He has had the privilege of being mentored under the guidance of Glenn Richman (Bobby Hutcherson Quintet), Ted Moore at UC Jazz, Berkeley, CA, and Jeff Denson (Lee Konitz, Minsarah, San Francisco String Trio, Jeff Denson Quartet). With an emphasis in Jazz Studies and Performance, Lion is a graduate of Berkeley's California Jazz Conservatory with a Bachelor of Arts.
With his first exposure to guitar in the San Francisco Bay Area being surf rock and music of the 90's, once in high school, Luis Salcedo had begun looking beyond to the jazz scene for a better understanding of how music functions.As the recipient of the Jamey Aebersold Scholarship and graduate of the California Jazz Conservatory, he has been fortunate enough to study with Jeff Massanari, Randy Vincent, Bruce Forman, Steve Erquiaga, and Jeff Denson. Taking with him what he learned from them, he has performed at Yoshi's Oakland, the Fillmore Jazz Festival and other venues from California to Colombia.Today he is drawn to the guitar because of its cultural omnipresence, and he continues to draw inspiration from a wide range of musicians and composers - Andres Segovia, Arnold Schoenberg, Charlie Parker, Kurt Rosenwinkel and the movements they represent; all of which have a huge influence on Luis' output as a composer and improviser.
With a firm grasp on the jazz idiom, Luis is a featured member of several ensembles, including a Core member of Oakland, CA group, Negative Press Project. He is the leader and co-leader of his own groups, LuMaMa, RDL+, among others, covering original material, jazz repertoire and beyond.No matter what the setting is, Luis always aims to tell a story. His process includes writing songs with words, even when the words will never be heard by anyone. He allows the words to inform the content, phrasing and melodicism. He is also known to vocalize as he improvises, singing along with himself as he solos.Now based in Brooklyn, New York, with late-night speakeasy gigs, weekly residencies, and occasional tours, Luis also is sure to make time for the outdoors, for the beach, the ocean, for travel, for coffee and friends.
Eli Maliwan is a transgender Asian American performing musician, composer, educator, activist, who was born and raised in the Bay Area, CA. He performs, records, and tours with multiple local projects including his own: Saxreligious. He studied music full time in lieu of traditional high school and received a Bachelorโs of Music from Portland State University where he was deeply influenced by the mentorship of Darrell Grant. Eli continued study with a Masterโs of Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts. Although his obsession with saxophone is 26 years strong, Eli is a multi-instrumentalist that also performs on flute, clarinet, EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument), piano, electric bass, and voice.
Due to the pandemic and the loss of safe live performance opportunities, Eli started focusing on composition and music production in Ableton. He felt heavily affected by the historic avalanche of anti-trans legislation and rising reports of violent anti-Asian sentiment in the US. One day he saw an article about a sea slug that decapitates itself and grows a new body called: Elysia Marginata. Having had several gender affirming surgeries, and because his birth name happens to be โElysiaโ, he felt deeply inspired. The music of his debut album, Elysia Marginata, represents rebirth, growth, healing, and joy during a time of uncertainty and pain. It celebrates intersecting marginalized identities and is a self-care love letter to other quirky children of the 90โs, the queer and trans community, and the Bipoc community.
Eli has had the honor of performing with Jimmy Heath, Steve Turre, James Moody, Slide Hampton, and Alphonso Johnson. Eli has played at prestigious festivals such as Uberjazz in Hamburg Germany opening for the Sun Ra Arkestra, SF Jazz in CA, San Jose Jazz Fest in CA, Noise Pop Festival in CA, Bric Jazz Festival in NY, Winter Jazzfest in NY, Portland Jazz Festival in OR, The Waterfront Blues Festival in Portland OR, as well as several dates with Salami Rose Joe Louis Quartet opening for Flying Lotus on his national 2019 tour.
Noah Simpson is a trumpet player, composer, and producer currently based in the PNW (Portland, OR). Originally from Phoenix, Noah started his music education at Scottsdale Community College and would finish at Portland State University.Simpsonโs modern approach to trumpet playing and improvisation is described as energetic, dynamic, and attentive.While currently teaching at Reed College and George Fox University, he frequently collaborates with artists like George Colligan, Alan Jones, Domo Branch, and other PNW natives. Heโs also worked with artist like George Benson, Bernard Purdie, Alex Acuna, and Ron Artis II. Currently heโs producing AR location based media under the As:Is label.
Adam Carlson is a Bend, OR native now living in Portland, Oregon as a freelance musician. He graduated from the University of Oregon in 2014 with a Bachelorโs Degree in Jazz Studies (Cum Laude) and has performed hundreds of times around the Northwest.Adam also spent a year in New York City where he honed his playing style to include jazz, soul, latin, funk, rock, and pop.Carlsonโs interest in jazz grew exponentially (and eventually became an addiction as he puts it) as inspired by local Bend jazz educators, such as Andy Armer (Herb Alpert) and Jody Henderson.
Under the direction of Steve Owen while at UofO, Adam traveled to Europe to perform with the Oregon Jazz Ensemble at four renowned, international Jazz festivals: The Montreux Jazz Festival, the Umbria Jazz Festival, Jazz รก Vienne, and Festival Internazionale del Jazz della Spezia.Currently, he works most frequently with Ben Rice and the PDX Hustle, Tony Starlight, Patrick Lamb, Luke Broadbent, McKayla Marie, Galen Clark, Dan Balmer, Under The Lake, and Justin Copeland.
