Zoltan grew up in the '50s behind the Iron Curtain in Budapest, Hungary, and started taking classical piano lessons at age 8.
Hungary in the 1960s experienced a loosening of rigid Communist state control over culture, and that allowed more outside influences to arrive. One of them changed Zoltan's life.
When he was a young teen, he and friends went to see a Dixieland jazz band that came to town to play a concert. Zoltan was captivated by the trumpet and quickly switched to the horn.
He began training his lip and his ear, with help from imported LP records and radio jazz shows that were being allowed in Hungary on a wider basis during the 1970s. His favorite player? Then and now, it was the great Freddie Hubbard.
After graduating from the Bela Bartok Jazz Conservatory in the mid-70s, Zoltan won a spot as a member of the renowned Studio 11, the top orchestra heard on Hungarian radio.
Later, as a member of different groups , he toured in Kuwait, Norway and Denmark.
By the time he came to Canada in 1983, his jazz chops were developed. Now, in South Florida since 1989, he is in demand to play as the front man and improvisor, or in horn sections.
