Outstanding Women in Jazz at

The North East Florida Jazz Association (NEFJA) presents “Outstanding Women in Jazzat its 10th annual Jeep McCoy Scholarship Concert/Supper at 4 p.m., October 20 at the Museum of Arts & Sciences in Daytona Beach.

Headlining the concert is New York jazz pianist and vocalist Sue Maskaleris, who is also a prolific, award-winning composer and lyricist, as well as a gifted arranger and producer (and occasional violinist and bassist).

Headlining the concert is New York jazz pianist and vocalist Sue Maskaleris, who is also a prolific, award-winning composer and lyricist, as well as a gifted arranger and producer (and occasional violinist and bassist).

Maskaleris will be performing with some outstanding local female musicians including Sallie Quick on bass, 2011 NEFJA scholarship winner Mercedes Beckman on saxophone, and percussionist Melanie DiLorenzo.

Also performing will be NEFJA vice-president and keyboardist Doug Carn and the 2012 recipient of the Jeep McCoy Memorial scholarship Daniel Dickinson, who plays the clarinet and saxophone. Vocalist Bethany Grove will join the group during the supper hour.

The Jeep McCoy Annual Concert/Suppers are an outgrowth of the musical celebration of the life NEFJA’s founder, Eugene “Jeep” McCoy. Upon his passing in 2002, musicians and NEFJA scholarship recipients convened at the Flagler Auditorium to pay respect to his memory by performing the music McCoy loved. That event generated sufficient donations to create a scholarship in his name and NEFJA established an annual event for the sole purpose of perpetuating this scholarship.
