(b)The Central PA Friends of Jazz Fall Concert Series(/b) final event for 2012!
Jazz vocalist Jackie Ryan has been thrilling audiences across the globe with her powerful 3 ½ octave range and her amazing stage presence. She has developed a style that is uniquely her own. Born of a Mexican mother who sang in operettas and an Irish father who sang classical tenor in many languages, she was, as one critic put it, "simply born to sing." She has sung all over the world from the famous Ronnie Scott's Club in London (where she was asked to record for their label) to Jazz at Lincoln Center and Birdland in New York to Oakland's Yoshi's, as well as many of the major jazz festivals. Her style includes an amazing range from gospel and blues to Braziian Bossa Novas. From Latin to Bebop, from Vocalese to the most heartfelt ballads. She sings in several languages. "Everything she sings comes off beautifully, with amazing control. If she sings loud and brassy, she nails it; if she goes soft and silky, she owns it." (Baker and Taylor's CD Hotlist review)...

Jackie's latest double CD, DOOZY, featuring Cyrus Chestnut, Eric Alexander, Romero Lubambo and Jeremy Pelt, has garnered overwhelmingly positive reviews as well as 4-stars (excellent!) from both DOWNBEAT and All Music Guide, and held the #1 position nationwide on JazzWeek's industry-standard chart for 7 solid weeks - an extraordinarily rare achievement (only one vocal recording ever matched that: Diana Krall's, "From This Moment On").
Jackie Ryan was a featured artist on NPR, Voice of America, CNN Español, and PRIMETIME A&E. She has shared the stage and/or recorded with: Clark Terry, Toots Thielemans, Barry Harris, The Jeff Hamilton Trio, Amina Figarova, Cyrus Chestnut, Terry Gibbs, Eric Alexander, Buddy DeFranco, Red Holloway, Romero Lubambo, and Jon Hendricks, to name just a few.
She is "one of the outstanding jazz vocalists of her generation and, quite possibly, of all time. She is the thoroughbred vocal equivalent of the Triple Crown, rivaling the dexterous sass of Sarah Vaughan, the instinctive smarts of Carmen McRae and the scintillating verve of Diana Krall." Christopher Loudon, JAZZTIMES
Jackie currently lives in San Francisco and will bring her East Coast Trio to the Ware Center.
Tom Lawton - piano; Lee Smith - bass; and Dan Monaghan - drums.
CPFJ showcases area youth groups at each of our Fall and Spring Concerts. Opening the October concert at 3pm will be the exciting Central PA jazz quartet META4. Meta4 is something seldom seen, a working jazz quartet consisting of all teenagers. Together for four years, Meta4 is an exciting straight-ahead ensemble that plays classic tunes by jazz's best artists, such as Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins, and popular standards. The band’s members, all seniors in high school, are John Gingerich (bass), Ted Groth (guitar) and Colin Mekeel (alto sax, piano) from Manheim Township, plus Fred Griggs (drums) from Carlisle. All four placed first in this year's District Jazz Band auditions, while Ted and Fred placed first in the 2012 All-State Jazz Ensemble competition. Meta4 plays several times a month at local restaurants, libraries, retirement communities, private parties, and churches.
This is our third CPFJ concert in the fabulous Steinman Hall in the Ware Center in Lancaster, PA and we are proud to co-host this event with them.
