A streetwise New York City native, Lakecia Benjamin first picked up the saxophone at Fiorello LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts. From there she joined the renowned jazz program at New York’s New School University. However, even at that early stage, Benjamin was already playing with renowned jazz figures like Clark Terry and Reggie Workman, which introduced her to opportunities to play and tour with an array of artists such as Rashied Ali, Christian Mcbride, Gregory Porter, and James “Blood” Ulmer. With her deep jazz roots, she was soon in demand as an arranger and horn section leader, landing stints with such acclaimed artists as Anita Baker.

Last summer, Benjamin released the album “Phoenix Reimagined (Live),” recorded in a Brooklyn studio in front of a small live audience. The album features a distinguished cast of guests including guitarist John Scofield, drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts, and trumpeter Randy Brecker. The guests add new dimensions to the new and previously released songs, and the album captures the energetic atmosphere and spontaneity of a live performance. At April Jazz, the audience will be able to experience this for themselves in the club-like Louhi Hall.

Saksofonisti Lakecia Benjaminin ura on ollut viime vuosina huimassa nousukiidossa. Menestystä ovat vauhdittaneet mainiot levytykset sekä energiset esiintymiset erityisesti Euroopan ja Pohjois-Amerikan keikkalavoilla. Myös palkintoja ja tunnustuksia on kertynyt monella rintamalla. Parhaillaan Benjamin on ehdolla Grammy -palkinnon saajaksi kahdessa kategoriassa – parhaasta jazz-esityksestä sekä parhaasta instrumentaalisesta jazz-albumista.
Vuonna 2023 julkaistu “Phoenix” -albumi poiki yhdellä rysäyksellä peräti kolme Grammy-ehdokkuutta. Samana vuonna Benjamin valittiin vuoden parhaaksi ulkomaiseksi saksofonistiksi Saksassa (German Jazz Prize). Seuraavana vuonna Amerikan jazztoimittajat äänestivät Benjaminin vuoden parhaaksi alttosaksofonistiksi (JJA Jazz Awards).
Lakecia Benjaminin levyillä ja intensiivisen säkenöivillä livekeikoilla jazziin yhdistyy räjähtävä sekoitus soulia ja funkia. Hänellä on myös erityinen taito kommunikoida yleisön kanssa. Koko vaikuttavan uransa ajan Benjamin on ollut haluttu yhteistyökumppani ikonisille artisteille kuten Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys ja The Roots.
Artistin kolmas sooloalbumi, vuonna 2020 julkaistu “Pursuance: The Coltranes” oli kunnianosoitus jazzmusiikin pioneerien John ja Alice Coltranen työlle. Benjamin esitti levyllä uusia ja jännittäviä tulkintoja innoittajiensa musiikista.
“Phoenix” -menestysalbumilla Benjamin käsittelee kotikaupunkinsa New Yorkin pandemian jälkeistä ylösnousemusta ja osoittaa samalla kunnioitusta amerikkalaiselle kansalaisoikeusliikkeelle. Levyn nimi viittaa myös artistin toipumiseen autokolarin aiheuttamasta vakavasta loukkantumisesta.

Viime kesänä Benjamin julkaisi brooklynlaisella studiolla pienen liveyleisön edessä äänitetyn levyn “Phoenix Reimagined (Live)”. Albumin nimekkääseen vierailijakaartiin kuuluvat kitaristi John Scofield, rumpali Jeff “Tain” Watts ja trumpetisti Randy Brecker. Vierailijoiden myötä uudet ja aiemmin julkaistut kappaleet saavat uusia ulottuvuuksia ja levylle on tallentunut live-esityksen energinen tunnelma ja spontaanius. April Jazzeilla yleisö pääsee kokemaan itse Lakecia Benjaminin konserttielämyksen Espoon kulttuurikeskuksen klubitunnelmaisessa Louhisalissa.
