Tacomassa, Washingtonin osavaltiossa Yhdysvalloissa vuonna 1953 syntynyt Diane Schuur oppi pianonsoiton lapsena korvakuulolta ja opiskeli sittemmin soittamista Washingtonin näkövammaisten koulussa 11-vuotiaaksi saakka. Schuur eli lapsuutensa ja nuoruutensa jazzvaikutteiden ympäröimänä. Schuurin esikuvia ovat olleet mm. Dinah Washington, Miles Davis, Carole King ja Paul Simon. Schuur on voittanut kaksi Grammy-palkintoa ja ollut niiden lisäksi kolmesti Grammy-ehdokkaana.
