The drummer Jaska Lukkarinen performed with the UMO for the first time in 2003, and now he takes centre stage in this concert series. Lukkarinen is currently finalising his artistic doctoral degree at the Sibelius Academy, and the joint concert with the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra marks the final artistic component of his doctoral degree.
Lukkarinen is exploring different approaches to accompaniment on the jazz drum set, with a particular focus in this concert on the concept of soloistic accompaniment. His research examines ways to integrate the drums into the overall timbre of the big band as well as combining the surprise elements and dynamic extremes of small ensemble performances with big band accompaniment. Most of all, the concert will showcase great big band jazz – not dry, academic research.
The concert is part of UMO’s 50th anniversary season. The concert at Musiikkitalo is a co-production of the Sibelius Academy of the Uniarts Helsinki and UMO, while the concert in Porvoo  is produced in collaboration with the Porvoo Jazz Festival.
Jaska Lukkarinen (b. 1982) is a versatile and sought-after jazz drummer, who is also active as a teacher and composer, and runs his own record label, Jaskaa. He has released several albums with his own ensembles – the latest being One For Joe (2023) – and has played on over a hundred albums, leaving his unique mark on the Finnish jazz scene. UMOn riveissä ensimmäisen kerran vuonna 2003 vieraillut rumpali Jaska Lukkarinen nousee tämän konserttisarjan valokeilaan. Taiteellista tohtorintutkintoaan Sibelius-Akatemiassa viimeistelevälle Lukkariselle yhteiskonsertti UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestran kanssa on tutkinnon viimeinen taiteellinen osio.
Jazzrumpusetin säestyksen eri tapoja tutkiva Lukkarinen paneutuu konsertissa erityisesti termiin solistinen säestäminen. Hän etsii tapoja tuoda rummut osaksi big bandin koko sointiväriä ja yhdistää pienyhtyesoiton yllätyksellisyys ja dynaamiset ääripäät big band -säestykseen. Musiikin on säveltänyt konsertin kapellimestarinakin toimiva Mikko Hassinen.
Luvassa on ennen kaikkea hyvää big band -jaskaa – ei nuotinhajuista akateemista tutkimusta.
Konsertti on osa UMOn 50-vuotisjuhlakauden ohjelmistoa. Musiikkitalon-konsertti on Taideyliopiston Sibelius-Akatemian ja UMOn yhteistuotanto, Porvoon-konsertti tuotetaan yhteistyössä Porvoo Jazz Festivalin kanssa.
Jaska Lukkarinen (s. 1982) on monipuolinen ja kysytty jazzrumpali, aktiivinen pedagogi ja säveltäjä, joka pyörittää omaa Jaskaa-levymerkkiään. Lukkarinen on julkaissut omilla kokoonpanoillaan useita albumeita, viimeisimpänä One For Joe (2023), sekä soittanut yli sadalla albumilla jättäen oman kädenjälkensä suomalaiseen jazzkenttään.
