What are jazz standards? They are the cornerstones of a jazz music repertoire. A bit like Bach, Beethoven and Brahms in classical music. In the early days of jazz, songs were borrowed from either Broadway musicals or Hollywood movies. Many of these songs were therefore familiar to everyone. A little later, jazz musicians began composing their own music to perform, as Miles Davis did. These are also called standards.
The set played by Iiro Rantala Trinity consists of less well-known standards, such as But Beautiful or Bluesette, but there are also tunes everyone knows, such as Singing in the Rain, Smile and Someday My Prince Will Come. I wanted Kaisa Mäensivu on bass and Jaska Lukkarinen on drums for this ensemble and they said: I do. It's a great pleasure to play these jazz classics with them! In 2026, it will be 100 years since jazz symbolically arrived in Finland with the ship Andania. The year thus marks a historic centenary celebration for Finnish jazz: Jazz in Finland 100. The anniversary highlights Finnish jazz and its artists both in Finland and abroad, celebrating jazz as part of Finland’s cultural heritage. The Jazz in Finland 100 campaign is coordinated by the Finnish Jazz Federation.

Mitä ovat jazzstandardit? Ne ovat jazzmusiikin repertuaarin kulmakivi. Vähän sama asia, kuin Bach, Beethoven, Brahms klassisessa musiikissa. Jazzin alkuaikoina soitetut kappaleet lainattiin joko Broadway-musikaaleista tai Hollywood-elokuvista. Useat näistä kappaleista olivat siis kaikille tuttuja. Vähän myöhemmin jazzin soittajat alkoivat itse säveltämään omat keikkakappaleensa, kuten Miles Davis teki. Näitäkin kutsutaan standardeiksi.
Iiro Rantala Trinityn setti koostuu vähemmän tunnetuista standardeista kuten But Beautiful tai Bluesette mutta mukana on myös kaikkien tuntemia melodioita kuten Singing in the Rain, Smile ja Someday My Prince Will Come. Halusin tähän kokoonpanoon Kaisa Mäensivun bassoon ja Jaska Lukkarisen rumpuihin ja he sanoivat: tahdon. On suuri ilo soittaa näitä jazzin klassikoita juuri heidän kanssaan! Vuonna 2026 tulee kuluneeksi 100 vuotta siitä, kun jazz symbolisesti rantautui Andania-laivan mukana Suomeen. Vuosi on siten historiallinen kotimaisen jazzin juhlavuosi: Jazz Suomi 100 -juhlavuosi. Juhlavuosi nostaa esiin kotimaista jazzia ja sen tekijöitä niin Suomessa kuin ulkomailla, ja juhlii jazzia osana suomalaista kulttuuriperintöä. Jazz Suomi 100 -kampanjaa koordinoi Suomen Jazzliitto.
