Seppo Kantonen Trio marks the pianist’s return to the traditional piano-bass-drums format. The trio has been rehearsing regularly since the beginning of 2023 and will continue to do so. The group toured extensively in Finland during January-February and September-November 2024.
“The ensemble began rehearsing my new compositions at the start of 2023. The band’s expressive language is relatively free but rooted in composed material. I feel that only recently have I found the blend of consonances and dissonances that I truly like. The mood of my pieces is enhanced by Markku Ounaskari’s beautiful drum sound and Antti Lötjönen’s rhythmically strong bass playing, with both musicians being highly sensitive and quick to react to new situations. Seppo Kantonen trio merkitsee pianistille paluuta perinteisen piano-basso-rummut-trion pariin. Trio on harjoitellut säännöllisesti vuoden 2023 alusta lähtien ja tulee jatkamaan samalla lailla edelleen. Yhtye kiersi laajasti Suomessa tammi-helmikuussa ja syys-marraskuussa 2024.
“Kokoonpano aloitti uuden sävellysmateriaalini harjoitukset vuoden 2023 alussa. Bändin ilmaisullinen kieli on vapaahko mutta sävellettyyn pohjautuva. Omasta mielestäni olen vasta viime aikoina löytänyt mieleiseni sekoituksen konsonansseista ja dissonansseista. Kappaleitteni tunnelmaa tukevat Markku Ounaskarin kaunis rumpusoundi ja Antti Lötjösen rytmisesti vahva basismi molempien ollessa myös herkkiä ja nopeita reagoimaan uusiin tilanteisiin. Kaiken kaikkiaan trion pyrkimys selkeään ilmaisuun on mielestäni parhaiten kuvaava luonnehdinta.”– Seppo Kantonen
Yhtyeen repertuaari on laajentunut koko ajan Sepon uusien sävellysten myötä ja niitä luvassa on runsaasti.
