Saxophonist Mikko Innanen, UMO’s Young Soloist from 1995, appears at the helm of the orchestra for the first time in fifteen years in the premiere of his five-part composition to American writer Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s poems. The oldest part, Jazz & Poultry, was written in 2003, while the four other parts Innanen composed in New York in 2012. The big band versions to be heard in this concert he arranged specifically for UMO. The concert will see Finnish singer Sanni Orasmaa feature as a guest vocalist and Mikko Hassinen on the conductor’s podium.

In 2017 he took action to raise awareness of the deteriorating condition of the Baltic Sea by playing solo on a raft made of plastic garbage in the Aura River, Turku. Other recent projects include Innanen and co.’s spiralic-global revival of provincial songs (Maakuntalaulu-uudistus), with which they toured around Finland last year. In addition to leading his own groups Innkvisitio, 10+, PLOP, Delirium and Gourmet, Innanen has made an impressive international career by playing with the likes of Kalle Kalima, Andrew Cyrille, John Tchicai, Han Bennik, Ingrid Jensen and Wadada Leo Smith. Currently, his discography comprises over 50 recordings, and critics have shortlisted the 2008 Yrjö Jazz Prize awardee among the Rising Stars in Downbeat magazine already four times consecutively.

Saksofonisti Mikko Innasen viisiosainen sarja yhdysvaltalaisrunoilija Lawrence Ferlinghettin teksteihin saa big band -kantaesityksensä, kun UMOn nuori solisti 1996 Innanen saapuu orkesterin eteen viidentoista vuoden tauon jälkeen. Vanhin sarjan osista, Jazz & Poultry, on vuodelta 2003 ja loput neljä osaa Innanen sävelsi New Yorkissa vuonna 2012. Big band -versiot Innanen on sovittanut erityisesti UMOa varten. Laulusolistina konsertissa vierailee Sanni Orasmaa ja kapellimestarina toimii Mikko Hassinen.
Mikko Innanen (s. 1978) on saksofonisti, säveltäjä ja yhtyeenjohtaja, joka tuntuu olevan aina siellä missä tapahtuu. Vuonna 2017 hän otti musiikillista kantaa Itämeren tilaan konsertoidessaan yksin muovijätelautalla keskellä Aurajokea. Viime vuoteen mahtui myös Innasen ja yhteistyökumppaniensa spiraalis-globaalisen maakuntalaulu-uudistuksen 17 konsertin Suomen-kiertue. Niin ikään viime vuonna Innanen toteutti 12-henkisen 10+-orkesterinsa ja turkulaisen 16-henkisen Key Ensemble-kuoron kanssa 50-minuuttisen Fryygia-teoksensa.
Innanen on luonut jo mittavan kansainvälisen uran esiintymällä omien pitkäaikaisten yhtyeidensä Innkvisition, 10+:n, PLOP:in, Deliriumin ja Gourmetinlisäksi esimerkiksi Kalle Kaliman, Andrew Cyrillen, John Tchicain, Han Benninkin, Ingrid Jensenin ja Wadada Leo Smithin kanssa. Innasen diskografia käsittää tällä hetkellä yli 50 levytystä. Vuoden 2008 Yrjö-palkittu Innanen on noussut jo neljä kertaa peräkkäin DownBeat-lehden kriitikkoäänestyksen Rising Star -listalle.
