Valtteri Laurell Nonet orchestra plays modern, intimate jazz that finds its inspiration in the early 1960s concepts of cool jazz and third stream. Every top artist in this all-star ensemble gets to play a solo as well, but the focus is on clarinet player Antti Sarpila's timeless and soulful expression. Sarpila is mainly known for his orchestras that perform highly traditional swing-era music, and it is wonderful to hear how his sound carries timelessly across different jazz styles.
The theme of the compositions is based on the less known British Caribbean author Jean Rhys's novels, and her only published novel, Wide Sargasso Sea. The melancholy and lifelike imagery of these writings provided Valtteri Laurell Pöyhönen with fertile soil to cultivate his emotive, sorrowful, and yet occasionally light jazz music. We Jazz Records record company from Helsinki will release the band's debut album Tigers Are Better Looking at the beginning of 2023....
