In celebration of his recently released debut solo album “Sentimental Swing,” jazz violinist Duane Padilla will present a concert of romantic improvisations inspired by the lyricism of Frank Sinatra and the eternally optimistic melodies of French jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli in HPR’s Atherton Studio on Saturday, November 19th at 7:30 p.m. The concert will feature songs from his new album as well as classics from The Great American Songbook. Joining him will be Joshua Kaye on piano and Ricardo Diaz on bass. Tickets are $25 general, $20 for HPR members, and $15 for students with ID. Former Honolulu Symphony violinist Duane Padilla stumbled into Honolulu’s jazz scene very much by accident. He recalls, “After rehearsal one evening, I decided to go to dinner and enjoy a musical set by Hawaii’s then reigning jazz duo Azure McCall and Tennyson Stephens at Chai’s Bistro. As I was leaving, Azure mischievously called from the stage, ‘You don’t think you can leave without playing a song do you?’ Unsure of how to respond, I took out my violin, even though I had never played a note of jazz in my life, and tried to stumble through 3 choruses of “Autumn Leaves.” After that evening, I knew my musical life would never be the same.”
Since that fateful evening, Duane has been busy building his reputation as Hawaii’s premiere jazz violinist. In May 2011, “Django Would Go!,” the album by his gypsy jazz band, Hot Club of Hulaville, was named Jazz Album of the Year by the Hawaii Academy of Recording Artists. In July, his internationally broadcast debut solo jazz violin album “Sentimental Swing” tied Grammy winner Esperanza Spaulding for the #105 spot on Jazz Week’s Radio airplay report. In September, he opened for jazz guitar giant Martin Taylor at the Djangofest Northwest Festival in Whitbey Island, WA. In March 2012, he will be presenting a lecture at the American String Teachers Assocation’s National Conference in Atlanta, GA on swing violin in the style of Stephane Grappelli.
Duane Padilla holds a Masters Degree from Yale University and a Bachelors Degree from Northwestern University. A decorated classical violinist, he earned fellowships to perform with the National Repertoire Orchestra and the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra. As a member of The Gemini Duo, he was a semi-finalists in the Concert Artists Guild Competition in NYC and won outreach grants from Chamber Music America and the American Federation of Musicians. Also a gifted music educator., Duane is currently on the violin faculty at the Punahou Music School.
