It will be a rare opportunity to hear this extraordinary guitarist present iconic music that you know and love in a unique way that youve never heard before.Some of you may be familiar with Johnny. You may remember hearing his hit Oh Yeah, from his debut album Sometime Tuesday Morning (Favored Nations, 2001), on WXPN. You may have also seen him as lead guitarist with The Yardbirds the past few years.And guitar geeks may know that he has four signature guitars3 Gibsons and 1 Epiphonemade to his specifications and bearing his name, an honor which is bestowed upon only the most innovative and worthy guitarists.During Johnnys entire musical career on his own, he performed and recorded with a full band, first as a power trio with bass and drums and later as a quartet, with a rhythm guitarist added to the lineup, to support his most recent album Driven (Aglaophone, 2014). In a telephone interview from his home just north of Boston, Johnny discussed how he developed the current show.I had been wanting to do a solo thing for years, said Johnny. I had been thinking about it for at least five years. But every time Id do it, I just didnt think it sounded good or I just didnt think it was up to the level of what I needed it to be for me to feel satisfied.Then, he was offered an opportunity to perform on blues legend Joe Bonamassas Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea cruise.They asked me if I could do a master class, could I come on without my band and just do a master guitar class or something. I said yes, even though I wasnt really prepared to do it. I had 6 or 7 months to prepare because I got the word back in June [2017] and the boat wasnt until February [2018].(The show is) based on all vocal songs, so the number one goal for me is to convey the feeling and the intent of the song lyrically. When I put these arrangements together, I try to grab elements of the original production arrangement that resonated with me. Whether that be the string part, whether that be the background vocals, whether that be the bass line, whether there was a little piano thing.
