Something’s Gotta Give finds the singer-bassist teaming up with the brilliant pianist Stefan Karlsson (who teaches at the University of Texas at Arlington, has led nine CDs and collaborates with many of the who’s who of modern jazz), Jeff Hamilton (co-leader of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra and one of the most respected drummers of the past 30 years) and, on some selections, guitarist Davy Mooney who teaches at the University of North Texas and has seven CDs of his own.
A warm and friendly vocalist with a swinging style, Anthony Caceres is in prime form throughout Something’s Gotta Give; he also contributed all of the arrangements. Among the highlights are “What Is This Thing Called Love” (which includes the rarely-heard verse), “A Night In Tunisia,” an uptempo version of the ballad “I Got It Bad,” “Stairway To The Stars,” and the instrumental “A Father’s Love For Ant” (dedicated to his young son). Most unusual is a colorful transformation of the British new wave band Modern English’s “I Melt With You” into lively jazz. Also not to be missed are an enthusiastic “Something’s Gotta Give,” “Once In Awhile,” “Autumn Serenade” and a wistful “So Many Stars.”
Throughout Something’s Gotta Give, Caceres’ appealing vocals are augmented by fine solos from Karlsson, Hamilton, Mooney and the leader, with the result being a high-quality set of inventive jazz.
Anthony Caceres came to music naturally. Not only was his father a saxophonist and his brother David a fine saxophonist but his grandfather was violinist Emilio Caceres (who worked with Latin bands, Jack Teagarden and Harry James) and his grand uncle Ernie Caceres played baritone-sax and clarinet with Eddie Condon and Glenn Miller.
After serving in the Navy for four years and studying music in college, Anthony Caceres freelanced with a variety of groups and played bass with the Glenn Miller Orchestra during 2005-07. Since then he has blossomed as a jazz singer, bassist and bandleader, becoming an important part of the Houston jazz scene.
The release of Something’s Gotta Give is his latest accomplishment. The official record release party will be taking place on March 9 at the Cezanne Jazz Club (4100 Montrose Blvd, Houston, TX 77004). Anthony Caceres will be joined by pianist Pamela York, guitarist Davy Mooney and drummer Rich Derosa.
