With over 400 recordings under his belt with the likes of Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard, Kenny Garrett and Cassandra Wilson, it is clear that Mulgrew Miller is one of the most sought after pianists in jazz. He will perform a special concert at 7:30pm, Thursday, February 9th, at the St. Michael’s College McCarthy Arts Center in Colchester. The concert is free and open to the public.
A native to Greenfield, Mississippi, Mulgrew Miller set his mind on becoming a jazz pianist after seeing Oscar Peterson on television for the first time. “It was a life changing event. I knew right then that I would be a jazz pianist”. Mulgrew did indeed become a jazz pianist, and has adopted more from Peterson than his profession. Much of Mulgrew's playing has the same technical prowess so often connected with Peterson. Since then he has become a veteran of tours and recordings with such ensembles as Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, the Woody Shaw Quintet, the Mercer Ellington Orchestra and over six years with the Tony Williams Quintet. He has been featured on over 400 recordings, including many of his own recordings as a leader.
