James Dapogny’s Chicago Jazz Band, an internationally known group, will bring Gennett Records to life once again in Richmond, Indiana. Dapogny has performed to sold-out audiences at the Kennedy Center, given lecture concerts for the Smithsonian and opened for Benny Goodman. Specializing in authentic and spirited classic jazz, Dapogny’s band plays turn-of-the-century ragtime, New Orleans and Chicago Jazz of the 1920s, and small-band swing of the 1930s. Specializing in authentic and spirited classic jazz, Dapogny’s band plays turn-of-the-century ragtime, New Orleans and Chicago Jazz of the 1920s, and small-band swing of the 1930s. Dr. Dapogny, retired Music Professor from the University of Michigan, is considered the world’s foremost authority on Jelly Roll Morton. Joining the group is guest cornetist Andy Schumm of the West End Jazz, who has captured audiences with his remarkable renditions of Bix’s music. In a pre-concert chat, Rick Kennedy, author of Jelly Roll, Bix and Hoagy, along with Dapogny, will offer additional insights into the Gennett history.
