Jazz and Samba Istanbul 2014: Amy London Trio feat. Maucha Adnet
Amy London (vo), Maucha Adnet (vo), Roni Ben-Hur (g), Santi Debriano (b).
80’lerde katıldığı New York Şarkıcı Orkestrası’ndaki performansı ile efsanevi besteci Cy Coleman’ın dikkatini çekti. Coleman, onu 6 Tony ödüllü ve Grammy adayı Broadway Hit’i City of Angels’in vokal dörtlüsü “Angel City 4”da baş şarkıcı yaptı. City of Angels kapandıktan sonra “Rainbow Room”a katıldı. Afro-Cuban orkestrasındaki 3 yıllık tecrübesi ona Charlie Palmieri, Barry Rogers ve Jimmy Sabatier gibi latin caz starlarıyla sahne paylaşma olanağı sağladı ve müzikal yeteneklerine çeşitli perküsyon çalma becerilerini de eklemesine vesile oldu. Amy kendi grubuyla birlikte, The Blue Note, Dizzy’s, Birdland, Small’s, Sweet Rhythm, Kitano, Jazz Gallery vs. gibi NYC caz kulüplerinde sahne almaya devam etmektedir. Amy London, kuruluşunda önemli rol oynadığı New School’daki vokal caz programı’nda vokal eğitmeni olarak çalışmakta ve aynı zamanda önemli caz eğitmenlerinden eşi Roni Ben-Hur ile dünyanın çeşitli yerlerinde eğitim vermeye devam etmektedir.

Amy London
Born into a culturally active, Ohio-based Jewish family filled with mirth and talent, performing was quite literally in Amy’s DNA. Jazz began to officially enter her orbit when she began studying jazz piano as a high-school senior, and then had an opportunity to take voice lessons with Milt Weiner, who had coached Doris Day and Rosemary Clooney. “Milt was the first one to bring my attention to jazz phrasing and putting across the story, he was a huge influence,” says Amy. Though she earned her B.A. degree from Syracuse University in opera, Amy’s true passion, and most of her college musical experience, was singing in big bands, small bands and in musicals. She joined with singers Judy Niemack and Alexandra Ivanoff to form the vocal trio, ‘Jazz Babies.’ Seven years with the ‘Jazz Babies,’ along with experience gained in ‘Vocal Jazz, Inc.,’ a five-voice group that toured the New York City elementary schools, honed Amy’s jazz harmony chops to a high polish.
Further vocal group work with New York Singer’s Orchestra in the late eighties brought Amy to the attention of the legendary Broadway composer Cy Coleman, who cast her as the lead singer in the “Angel City 4,” the vocalese quartet that was the musical engine of his six-time Tony-winning and Grammy-nominated Broadway hit, City of Angels. After City of Angels closed, Amy enjoyed a three year stint at the ‘Rainbow Room,’ and also received a call from ‘New York Voices’ leader Darmon Meader to record with the group as the fifth voice on the CD Ancient Tower. A three year engagement in an Afro-Cuban band led by the NYC leader, Alfredito, gave her a chance to jam with such Latin jazz stars as Charlie Palmieri, Barry Rogers and Jimmy Sabatier while developing her “cool Latin vamp,” and led her to add mastery on a variety of percussion toys to her growing arsenal of musical talents. All the while, Amy was building her skills as a solo jazz singer, leading her own groups in NYC clubs such as The Blue Note, Dizzy’s, Birdland, Small’s, Sweet Rhythm, Kitano, Jazz Gallery and many more.
London is an in-demand vocal coach in NYC, and at New School University, where she helped establish the vocal jazz program (now one of the strongest such programs in the country). She also works and teaches with her husband Roni Ben-Hur, who is a key music educator in his own right.
Roni Ben-Hur
“Magical from start to finish” is Ron Netzky’s appraisal of Roni Ben-Hur’s newest album, Mojave, made in partnership with Brazilian bassist Nilson Matta. “The dozen musical passages draw you in, one after another,” says the Columbia Daily Tribune. These are just a few of the top accolades Roni Ben-Hur and Nilson Matta have received for Mojave, in this banner year for guitarist Roni Ben-Hur, which marks both his eighth CD release as a leader, and his second major educational release, the DVD, Chordability. Ben-Hur’s crystalline approach to guitar harmony outlined in Chordability promises to be an important new educational work for aspiring and mid-career guitarists, and follows up his popular Talk Jazz Guitar, published in 2003.
“…a deep musician, a storyteller, Ben-Hur works with a warm, glowing sound and has an alluring way of combining engaging notes with supple rhythm.”
- Zan Stewart, The Newark Star Ledger
2011 has brought much International notoriety for Ben-Hur. Performing tour dates around the US, France, Belgium, Holland, Brazil and Croatia, and leading 4 popular jazz camps in Brazil, South of France and Maine, Ben-Hur’s touring calendar was busier than ever. Mojave was released simultaneously in the US and Europe, gaining accolades from JazzTimes, Jazziz, and The Columbia Tribune. Hot on the heels of Fortuna, which peaked at #2 on the JazzWeek jazz radio chart, Mojave climbed up to the #18 spot.
A pioneer for what has become an important wave of top jazz talent coming out of Israel, Ben-Hur migrated to New York in 1985, at the age of 22, and was quickly embraced by Manhattan’s jazz elite. Learning jazz the old fashioned way by ‘doing the hang’ at notable venues such as Barry Harris’s Jazz Cultural Theater, he met a veritable who’s who in the jazz community. “People like Walter Booker, Barry Harris, Chris Anderson, and Leroy Williams offered me a window to this music,” says the guitarist, who was a key player in Harris’s band from 1991 to 2007. “They were some of my most important mentors. What attracted me to them is the way they always seem to go right to the essence of what music is about. They made me realize how it is never just about chords and scales and musical theory. It’s about the story you tell. That’s an important lesson for a young musician to learn.” Key characteristics of Ben-Hur remain his generosity and true passion for collaboration and passing the jazz torch; as such he’s earned both respect and love from a very wide community of jazz lovers.
“Everything Roni does is beautiful. He has the magic touch,” says fellow guitar master Russell Malone.
Ben-Hur’s previous Motéma releases, Fortuna (2009), Smile (2008), his duo project with guitar legend, Gene Bertoncini, and Keepin’ It Open (2007) received exceptionally high praise. Michael G. Nastos of All Music Guide commented that on Fortuna, “Ben-Hur has a band that literally can do no wrong” and that the album marked “a pinnacle moment in his laudable career as a jazz guitarist. Fortuna comes highly recommended, for lovers or lovers at heart.” Nat Hentoff of The Wall Street Journal described Smile as, “a lyrically meditative dialogue,” while Jazz Times’ Mike Joyce described Keepin’ It Open as, “A delight from start to finish.”
Ben-Hur’s signature sound infuses jazz with melodies and rhythms from many cultures, and with Fortuna, his seventh CD as a leader, he delivers another fine chapter in his swinging and emotionally gripping book of jazz.
“One of the Top 10 CDs of 2009″
- Dan Morgenstern, Annual Review of Jazz Studies
“A keen story teller, Ben-Hur’s dexterous, melodic and emotive playing is supported by a tight-knit cast of stellar musicians…his skill and warm tone underscoring the band’s chemistry”
- Sharonne Cohen, JazzTimes
In addition to leading his own bands, Ben-Hur has shared the stage and the studio with the likes of Barry Harris, Ronnie Mathews, Rufus Reid, Chris Anderson, Cecil Payne, Walter Booker, Etta Jones, Marcus Belgrave, Charles McPherson, Leroy Williams, Charles Davis, John Hicks, Jimmy Heath, Clark Terry, Slide Hampton, Earl May, Teri Thornton, Lewis Nash, Steve Kroon, and Bill Doggett. He regularly performs in major festivals and clubs around the world.
Along with being a prodigious player, composer, arranger, and bandleader, Ben-Hur has truly dedicated himself to educating others about the joys and rewards of playing jazz. Since being the jazz program founder/director at The Lucy Moses School at Kaufman Center in Manhattan,Roni has taught and inspired thousands of students through his jazz ensembles and workshops. He is also responsible, in collaboration with Santi Debriano, for creating a very successful weeklong jazz camp in the village of Saint Cezaire in Cote d’Azure, France. With Nilson Matta, he created the “Samba Meets Jazz” Camp in Bar Harbor, Maine and Paraty, Brazil. The camps offer adult jazz amateurs an opportunity to learn jazz and Latin music, and have become a major attraction in their region. Ben-Hurwas also on the faculty of the jazz camps in Stanford, Litchfield, and the National Guitar Workshops. His book, Talk Jazz, is much sought after by fellow musicians and students worldwide, and his 2011 DVD Chordability is already making waves in the jazz educational market.
2012 sees him gaining more ground as a touring artist and having a blast. “For me, jazz is not only a calling; it is a life force.”
