Recognizing Women’s History Month, Lisa Kelly presents a delightful concert at noon celebrating the women of jazz with a program of selected historical songs written by notable female composers, with a bit of background shared on each. Women have written and performed alongside their male counterparts throughout the development of every jazz era and have continued to influence America’s original musical art form enjoyed around the world. The artists of the Lisa Kelly Jazz Quartet are successful extensions of the award winning University of North Florida School of Music. With B.M. and M.M. degrees in jazz, Lisa Kelly is profiled in the 2010 book, The New Face of Jazz, inducted into the 2013 Jacksonville Jazz Festival “Hall of Fame” and is an unprecedented 8x Downbeat Magazine award winner for voice, composing and arranging. In 2014, Aaron Lehrian was the youngest ever to win the Jacksonville Jazz Festival Jazz Piano Competition, was a member of the Walt Disney All-American College Band, and is now completing his B.M. degree. Earning his B.M. at UNF, bassist Mike Perez is completing his M.M. degree this spring. Leader of the group, The Covenant, director of the LaVilla Jazz Discovery Series, John Lumpkin holds a B.M. from UNF, a M.M. from FSU. All four artists have been members of the UNF JE I big band, the President’s Trio, and continue to perform professionally from regionally to internationally.
