Another important period in Al Di Meola’s biography is the year 1980 when perhaps the most famous trio of guitarists of the 20th century was established together with John McLaughlin and Paco De Lucia whose album Friday Night In San Francisco was sold in as many as 2 million copies. The trio existed until 1983, and in 1996 it returned and organised an impressive concert tour.

The guitarist spent the last two decades of the past century recording one successful album after another and venturing into a great number of experiments. He toyed with electronic music, recorded tango melodies and compositions of Latin America pulsating with fire. Therefore it is almost impossible to definer what is the guitarist’s most favorite style. Perhaps the most accurate statement would be that Al Di Meola is simply madly in love with music.
Performers of different genres who constantly entice Al to play together with them noticed that feature of his a long time ago. Luciano Pavarroti, Paul Simon, Carlos Santana, Phil Collins, Herbie Hancock, Frank Zappa, Wayne Shorter, Jimmy Page, Stevie Wonder and many other musicians whose names are entered in the Encyclopaedia of Music can be mentioned among those whose invitations the guitarist has accepted.

The project World Sinfonia, which Al Di Meola is going to present at Kaunas Jazz 2012 concert of the year on 7 December in Vilnius Congress Concert Hall, is strongly influenced by the tango genius Astor Piazzolla: “He had a great influence over my development as a musician and a personality”.
