After its members-only annual meeting (6-8 pm) on Monday, 15 June 2015, the Arkansas Jazz Heritage Foundation will present its annual jazz celebration (8:30-11:30 pm), a fundraiser which is open to the public. The adults-only event will include performances by distinguished Arkansas jazz artists (some of whom have been or will be inducted into the Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame) and a tribute to jazz icon Clark Terry (14 December 1920 - 21 February 2015), who retired to Arkansas in 2006. The evening's featured jazz ensemble is the John Bush Quartet: John Bush (tenor sax), Chris Parker (keys), Bill Huntington (upright bass), Bryan Withers (drums). Ticket proceeds (along with dues and donations) fund the Arkansas Jazz Heritage Foundation's ongoing educational activities and upcoming Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame inductions (held only in even-numbered years). The $20 admission fee is waived for any adult whose annual dues ($20 payable 1 July) and completed membership application (available under "Downloads" at arjazz.org) have been postmarked or hand-delivered to the Arkansas Jazz Heritage Foundation by 8 June 2015. (Larger contributions are welcome. Each individual donating at least $50/$100/$500/$1000 receives public recognition and VIP seating.) Dues, donations, and membership forms should be mailed to the Arkansas Jazz Heritage Foundation (P. O. Box 251187, Little Rock, AR 72225-1187) or hand-delivered to its executive board meeting at The Afterthought on Monday, 8 June 2015 (6-8 pm).
Since seating for the jazz celebration is limited to approximately 100, those planning to attend are encouraged to arrive early and dine at the venue. This annual jazz celebration is the only fundraising event for the all-volunteer, non-profit Arkansas Jazz Heritage Foundation, which since 1994 has sponsored and maintained the Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame. With Articles of Incorporation issued by the State of Arkansas on 7 January 1992, the Foundation is dedicated to educating the general public about the historical significance of jazz in Arkansas. Foundation membership is open to any adult interested in preserving, celebrating, and promoting jazz in The Natural State. Informational materials - as well as a membership application - are provided in PDF under "Downloads" on the AJHF website (arjazz.org), which serves primarily as an archival reference and provides some details about 50 Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame inductees under "Hall of Fame," "Artists," and "Archive." The Arkansas Jazz Heritage Foundation/Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame holds each of its board meetings (as well as an occasional meet-and-greet) before/during Monday Jazz at The Afterthought because it is the only Little Rock venue which has presented live jazz continuously - at least once a week - since the 1970s. (That distinction earned the iconic club a place on the map in the first print edition of the Encyclopedia of Arkansas Music, published in September 2013 by the Central Arkansas Library System's Butler Center for Arkansas Studies.) Located in the historic Hillcrest neighborhood and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Afterthought and its adjoining restaurant occupy a building which served as the town hall for Pulaski Heights before its 1916 annexation by Little Rock.
