About

“I grew up in Essex and was always singing and generally performing – you literally couldn’t shut me up! Mum was also a singer and taught me and my sister to sing in harmony as kids” - Annique says she was actually singing before she could speak! It was at the Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM) in London that Annique formalised her vocal education. In fact studying and graduating from ACM proved to be a game changer, leading in short order to a career as a sought-after backing singer, working with some of her favourite artists including Gorillaz and Mike Skinner and followed by an introduction to the multi-instrumentalist & producer Koby Israelite (acclaimed in jazz & world music circles for his long association with John Zorn’s label TZADIK). That meeting sparked an electric collaboration and a series of songs that became their debut album “Heads Up”, smokily atmospheric, sophisticated adult pop, suffused with angelic-sounding choruses, strong lyrics and heartfelt soul. It drew on Koby’s gypsy and eastern influences and Annique’s strong jazz heritage, which ranges from Ella Fitzgerald to Chaka Khan. So successful is their partnership that they are now back in the studio working on a second record, “Lady Wonder” to be released in spring of 2018 and songs from which you will also be hearing tonight. Continuing the fortuitous melding of evocative sounds from jazz, world, pop and rock with a bittersweet and even theatrical flavour and a “French-café” vibe, Annique is truly stepping out of the shadows into the limelight. She has performed all over the UK, including several appearances at Glastonbury and for her 606 debut, you can hear her for the first time at the Club in the company of Koby Israelite-drums/accordion/acoustic guitar/piano, Ed Riches-guitar, Rob Terry-keyboard and Yaron Stavi-bass. Highly recommended....
