About

Emma Smith is without question one of the leading Jazz vocalists of her generation, singing with a poise and facility that many singers twice her age would kill for. She is a third-generation Jazz musician, her grandfather Chris Smith Senior played trombone with Tubby Hayes, Oscar Peterson and Frank Sinatra, her father, trumpeter Chris Smith Jnr, writes and arranges for the likes of the BBC Big Band, and her mother, Simone, is an excellent sax player. So not too surprising then that she did her first gig when she was 14, started performing with NYJO when she was 15 and received a scholarship to the Purcell School of Music when she was 16 - the first ever jazz vocal student to do so. A graduate from the Royal Academy of Music, Emma has been featured at many if not most of London’s top jazz venues (including this one), though not as much recently as she took a time out from jazz to explore opportunities working in other genres. Emma is currently a member of vintage close harmony swing trio the Puppini Sisters, who have released five CD’s as well as working with artists such as Michael Bublé and appearing on numerous TV programmes both in the UK and abroad, from Alan Titchmarsh to Graham Norton and “Strictly Come Dancing”. In 2016, she was also chosen to be one of three hosts of BBC Radio Three's new jazz programme, "Jazz Now" (along with Soweto Kinch and Al Ryan), which further affirmed her stature in the jazz community. Her free range approach to the music and ease across a gamut of styles make her an exciting and characterful artist, though, that said, Emma has called Sinatra her biggest influence. A perfect fit therefore for Valentine’s Night, and we couldn’t be more pleased that Emma will be here with her impressive, hand-picked quintet, including Sam Watts-piano, Calum Gourlay-bass, Will Glaser-drums and rising star Matt Herd on sax. Our chef, Nadene, has produced a special menu for this special night, to give the occasion just that extra bit of flair. Reservations are required and we would suggest you make yours soon! ...
