Incorporating the distinctive presentation and unique quality of another American legend, Lou Rawls, Robinson projects the vocals of Lou Rawls described by one critic as “sweet as sugar, soft as velvet, strong as steel, and smooth as butter.”
Traveling on a light, melodious stream from the Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church on Chicago’s south-side, Lou Rawls was the personification of a “Natural Man”, a rare quality at that time. His was a unique, timeless image that created an intimate and personable communication that touched every corner of America. Discovered by Capitol Records in the 1960’s, Rawls signed with MGM in 1971 and won a Grammy for “ Dead End Street”. His annual “Lou Rawls Parade of Stars Telethon” benefited over 65,000 United Negro College Fund student scholarship recipients. And as the voice of Garfield the Cat, Rawls again captured hearts. He continues to this day to be a beloved cultural icon.
Though he died in 2006 at the age of 72, his music melodies and words have found a new voice through Marvin Robinson. Robinson seeks to carry on Rawls legacy of love, and to honor his image and singing style. These who revered Rawls and those newly acquainted with him will appreciate Robinson’s interpretation of Rawl’s amazing influence on the world of Rhythm and Blues.
Marvin Robinson’s tribute is dedicated to the many shared memories, and the lives of those who have been touched by the heart and soul of one of heaven’s finest gifts to mankind, Mr. Lou Rawls.
