Phil Ranelin Jazz Ensemble at Union Station

Metro Art presents the Phil Ranelin Jazz Ensemble, led by acclaimed trombonist, bandleader and experimental musician Phil Ranelin, Friday, November 17, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Waiting Room at Union Station. The Union Station piano, a fixture in the Waiting Room, will be played as part of the performance.

The Phil Ranelin Jazz Ensemble, led by trombonist/composer/arranger Phil Ranelin, is a multi-generational jazz group formed in 1996. Since its inception, the ensemble has shared the bill with artists such as Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp and Organist Jimmy Smith.

Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, Ranelin has been a mainstay of the Los Angeles jazz scene since the late 1970s (Ranelin relocated from Detroit in 1977 to join Trumpeter Freddie Hubbard's band). In 1999, Phil was designated Cultural Ambassador for the City of Los Angeles and also designated a "Rare and Valuable Cultural Treasure." During the mid to late 1990s, Ranelin, along with his representative Dalili Pierson, implemented a Los Angeles Jazz Appreciation Series that honored Los Angeles jazz icons such as Dexter Gordon, Charles Mingus, Hampton Hawes, Melba Liston, Harold Land, Horace Tapscott & Eric Dolphy .

In September of 2016, Ranelin was invited back to his hometown of Indianapolis, to perform at the Indy Jazz Festival in honor of Wes Montgomery and was also inducted into the Indianapolis Jazz Hall of Fame. The Phil Ranelin Jazz Ensemble members are: Phil Ranelin,(trombone & percussion), Curtis Taylor (trumpet), Aaron Shaw (tenor saxophone & flute) Kevin Toney (piano), Ian Martin (acoustic bass), and Clayton Cameron(drums).
