Miles Davis had already given previews of jazz-rock to come with “Stuff” and “Brown Hornet” in 1968 and the entire album In a Silent Way in 1969. But in 1970, the double-LP called Bitches Brew declared the arrival of a brave new era in music — called fusion. Combining jazz improvisation with the exciting, high-energy textures of post-Jimi Hendrix rock, Davis pointed the way towards a movement that involved several of the world’s most important musicians.
