Yes, Shakespeare Swings!
We celebrate the beauty and power of William Shakespeare's poetry and present it in lively jazz arrangements and beautiful ballads.
Christiana was inspired by the 1964 recording "Shakespeare and all that Jazz." John Dankworth had composed many of these arrangements for his wife, the eminent vocalist and performer, Dame Cleo Laine. These swinging tunes deserve to be heard again. Plus settings by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, from the suite "Such Sweet Thunder," and by other contemporary composers. -- We pair this rarely heard material with selections from the Great American Song Book that explore the same themes of love and lust, life and death, power and foolishness.
