HECTOR is a Melbourne-based saxophonist and composer who has studied with many of the greats. He received the Marion Thomas Award for Excellence in 2018 whilst studying his Bachelor of Jazz and Improvisation at the VCA, as well as being a nominee for the Athenaeum Club Young Artist Trust Jazz Award in 2022 during his honours year. His inspirations were Dexter Gordon, Mark Turner, Michael Brecker, John Coltrane and Herbie Hancock, and listening to them from a young age helped begin to shape his current sound. Tenor saxophone was not his first instrument, beginning on clarinet, progressing to alto, and then finally trying tenor. Since then the versatility and strength in tone of the tenor has made it his instrument of choice and chosen area of specialisation.
