Paquito D'rivera W/the Stamps Jazz & Wind Quintets at Faena Jazz Series at Faena Theater

The Faena Jazz Series season opens with an historical collaboration between famed saxophonist and composer Paquito D’Rivera and the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. Born in Cuba and a founding member of Latin jazz supergroup Irakere, D’Rivera has won a combined 16 Grammy and Latin Grammy awards and has released more than 30 solo albums. He is a rare player fluent in both jazz and classical music, as this concert shall display. The show will open with the Stamps Wind Quintet performing his popular classical piece “Aires Tropicales,” a five part suite for woodwind quintet highlighting musical styles popular in Cuba since the 18th century such as danzon, habanera, comparasa and son. The second part of the program will feature D’Rivera performing with the Stamps Jazz Quintet in the style of Latin jazz, which has brought him numerous accolades over a decades-long career....

The Stamps Wind and Jazz Quintets are two unique ensembles at the Frost School of Music. Through the generosity of the Stamps Scholars Program, five exceptional young artists of the highest caliber are selected every four years to be featured in each of these groups. Together, these students form a working jazz quintet for the length of their tenure at the Frost School of Music. This is the second time Faena Live has presented a collaboration with Stamps, with the first in 2022 featuring Puerto Rican saxophonist Miguel Zenon.
