Brian Handeland Quintet featuring guest trombonist/composer Nick Roach

Brian Handeland is a saxophonist/woodwind doubler and a native of Minneapolis, MN. Brian earned his Bachelors of Music-Saxophone Performance degree from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 2010, and then went on to attend graduate school in jazz studies at the University of North Texas. During his time in college, Brian played a variety of reed instruments in the concert bands, symphony orchestra, big bands and various jazz combos, including the DownBeat award winning UW-Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble 1 and the UNT Latin Jazz Ensemble, and the prestigious Grammy-nominated UNT 1:00 Lab Band. Most recently, Brian was part of a 7-month North American tour with Flashdance The Musical, playing saxophones, clarinet and flute. Brian currently resides in Mpls. whenever he is not on the road, and performs regularly with the folk/rock band Machinery Hill, as well as with various jazz/rock/ska groups around the Twin Cities....

Nick Roach is a trombonist originally from the DFW area, recently relocated to Chicago, IL. With lots of jazz, classical, Latin and pop performance experience, Nick is an in-demand musician in any style. Having performed in several states and played on cruise ships in 16 countries on 4 continents, Nick is an adept and versatile instrumentalist. He recently completed his Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies at the University of North Texas, where he studied with Tony Baker and Steve Wiest. While at UNT, Nick played lead trombone in the 3:00 Lab Band as well as performing with the Jazz Zebras, UNT Repertory Ensemble, Opera Orchestra and Concert Orchestra. Nick will be starting his master’s this fall at Northern Illinois University on a full jazz scholarship, and will be studying with acclaimed trombonist, composer and teacher Tom Garling.

Rounding out the quintet, we have an outstanding trio of Twin Cities jazz musicians: Ted Godbout (Piano), Graydon Peterson (Bass), and Jared Mondlock (Drums). Tonight’s set will feature a mixture of originals and original arrangements in various jazz sub-genres.
