Preston Haining at Jazz Central Studios

Preston Haining started his trumpet studies in the fourth grade, in his hometown of Edina, MN, a suburb of the Twin Cities. He is currently in the final year of his undergraduate degree in Jazz Studies at the University of North Texas. During his time at UNT, Preston has studied trumpet with Jay Saunders, Rodney Booth, Mike Steinel and Keith Johnson.

In addition to the One O’clock Lab Band, Preston has also played with the Two O’clock Lab Band under the direction of Jay Saunders, and the Three O’clock Lab Band under the direction of Brad Leali, as well as many other Lab Bands and ensembles. Preston’s influences include the trumpet playing of Ray Nance, Clifford Brown, Sonny Cohn and Snooky Young. Preston is also influenced by the incessant howling of the family beagle, Louie.

In his spare time, he practices trumpet, upright and electric bass, and plays gigs on all three, although not simultaneously…yet.
