Reid Kennedy Trio at Jazz Central Studios

Born and raised in the Mississippi River town of Winona, Minnesota, Reid Kennedy was formally introduced to music through six years of classical piano training. Upon receiving a statewide composition award at the age of eleven, Kennedy began playing the snare drum in his elementary band program and would continue his percussion and drumset pursuits through his high school years with Rich MacDonald, a professor at Winona State University.

With the support of family, friends, and influential music educators, Kennedy elected to continue his musical studies at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Throughout his undergraduate tenure, Kennedy embraced the opportunity to learn from mentors Fernando Meza, Phil Hey, and Steve Yeager, whose teaching and guidance would ultimately provide the knowledge and understanding to formulate a career in music. In the midst of his junior year, Kennedy won a national audition for the drum chair with the Disney All-American College Band, an honor that led to a summer performing at Disneyland in Anaheim, California with twenty select collegiate musicians from across the United States. Kennedy has enjoyed professional collaborations with Ernestine Anderson, Katisse Buckingham, Taylor Eigsti, Mark Gross, Judith Hill, Joe Lovano, Delfeayo Marsalis, Gunther Schuller, Walter Smith III, and others. He has also had the privilege of studying with Bernie Dresel, Peter Erskine, Jeff Hamilton, Steve Houghton, and Dave Weckl.
