In this workshop, we work individually and in ensemble to help you discover your own personal language and tools for scat singing, story-telling and lyric improvisation.With a few simple ideas and exercises, you can scat sing successfully and breathe new life into songs (even the ones you have been singing for years).
We will cover:

– Song form and singing over changes (i.e. counting bars)
– Melodic development and embellishment
– Front and back phrasing
– Basics of vocal percussion
– Syllable and language choice
– Building a sense of direction in your scat solos
– Exploring vocal textures
– Working with the lyric and lyric improvisation
– The key to scat singing effortlessly is to access and share your personal language and perspective. We begin with straightforward, step-by-step exercises that get you scat singing in ways that are easy for you.

Who can attend?
This workshop is open to singers of all levels, from beginners to professionals, who want to learn how to scat sing and improvise in songs and other standard forms. Previous experience scat singing is NOT necessary.

About Sarah M. Greer

Sarah M. Greer is a performer, instructor and improviser who combines vocal improvisation, education and performance. Based in the Twin Cities, Sarah has invented music on local and international stages. She loves performing and co-creating with other singers and instrumentalists.

She has studied improvisation with singers from around the world and learned circle singing from Rhiannon, a member of Bobby McFerrin’s Voicestra.

Sarah is passionate about the art of improvisation and helping singers trust, develop and enjoy their unique instruments.
