Minneapolis – The JazzMN Orchestra, touted as the premier jazz orchestra of the upper Midwest, welcomes the extraordinary talents of trumpeter Terell Stafford for its April 21st season finale. Hailed by piano legend McCoy Tyner as “one of the great players of our time,”, Stafford will be performing with JazzMN on Saturday, April 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hopkins High School Performing Arts Center. Artistic Director Douglas Snapp will announce JazzMN’s 2012-13 concert series during the concert.
Known for being a gifted and versatile player, Stafford combines lyricism and a deep love of melody with a spirited, adventurous edge. This uniquely expressive, well-defined musical talent allows Stafford the ability to dance in and around the rich trumpet tradition of his predecessors while making his own inroads. Stafford has recorded six albums as a leader, with his debut album in 1995 entitled Time to Let Go. In 1997, he followed this album with the critically acclaimed Centripedal Force. His third album as a leader was the popular Fields of Gold, featuring the talents of Bill Cunliffe, Kiyoshi Kitagawa, Antonio Hart, and Rodney Green. His fourth release was the enthusiastically-received New Beginnings and featured Mulgrew Miller, Derrick Hodge, Dana Hall, Steve Wilson, Dick Oatts, Harry Allen, and Jesse Davis. He followed this album with the critically-acclaimed Taking Chances. Stafford's newest release, This Side of Strayhorn, features Tim Warfield, Bruce Barth, Peter Washington, and Dana Hall, and has been called “the first must-have album of 2011” and “genius.”
As a sideman, Stafford has been heard on over 90 albums. An educator as well as a performer, Stafford currently holds the positions of Director of Jazz Studies and Chair of Instrumental Studies at Temple University in Philadelphia, where he has been a recipient of the University's “Creative Achievement Award.”

The JazzMN Orchestra includes many of the Twin Cities' finest jazz musicians. Members have performed with some of the world's top pop and jazz artists, and regularly play in Broadway shows and featured concerts in the Twin Cities. Formed as a nonprofit jazz arts organization by Snapp in 1998, JazzMN is a professional orchestra combining the talents of outstanding jazz musicians from throughout the Twin Cities; it follows the model of classical orchestras in striving for artistic excellence.
