KIRK HOUSE PUBLISHERS is a privately-owned, independent publisher. The Kirk House imprint was established in 1994 by Leonard Flachman and Karen Walhof. The imprint began as a response to requests by individuals and educational institutions for assistance in publishing autobiographical works and symposium papers. The company was incorporated under the laws of the State of Minnesota in 2001, and by 2007 has nearly 150 titles in print.

The changes in the publishing industry in the last decade gave rise to the Kirk House publishing paradigm. The big, major publishers seldom accept submitted manuscripts. They develop authors who have great visibility through some other avenue, or who have made a name for themselves with a smaller publisher.
